Sherwani – the Real Indian Wedding Dress

Known as the national dress of Pakistan, Sherwani is a long coat-like garment worn in South Asia, very similar to an achkan or doublet. Made from heavier fabrics unlike achkans, Sherwani is traditionally associated with the Muslim aristocracy. Off-late Sherwani have gained wide acceptance as the groom wear in a wedding. Even family and relatives often choose to wear sherwanis to mark festivity.

Sherwani signifies the rich traditional fashion style of India as it is a traditional outfit of Indian men. Sherwani are associated mostly with weddings and have become a renowned choice that has been tagged as the ideal men's Indian wedding dress. Bridegrooms, now equally participate in looking better, handsome and smarter than ever on these special days. A bridal Sherwani is the best choice for the Bridegroom. They look dazzling, elegant and impressive on Indian bridegrooms.

Sherwani is usually worn over a kurta and the lower part of the dress consists either of a churidar pyjama, khara pajama, shalwar or even jeans. Sometimes, a dhoti can also be used in place of pyjama with a Sherwani. A scarf can also be used which is draped over one or both the shoulders.

Sherwani is now famous as a wedding outfit and it has always been popular as an outfit which can be worn on formal events. The Sherwani signified dignity and etiquette of the nobility and it used to be the court dress of the nobles of Turkish and Persian origin. In India, the Sherwani is worn on formal occasions like festivals, weddings, and other special functions. A Sherwani carries a regal feel.

A Sherwani coat is usually of knee-length and it fits close to the body. The Sherwani coat is fastened in front with the help of buttons. Embroidery is done on Sherwani to enhance its appearance. There is a wide range of fabrics, designs, colors which can be used for a Sherwani as per the occasion. The Sherwani used by the groom is ornately decorated. These can be customized as per customer requirements.

Different types of sherwanis available are Peshawri and the Baloochi. A fusion of both eastern and the western styling, the elegant Sherwani is a typical attire of the North Indian and the Punjabi weddings. Jooties are also used with the Sherwani to complete the look.

A variety of fabrics available in Sherwani are cotton, tussar, silk, crepe and crepe. Detailed style works like kundan, embroidery, cutdana, pearls, beads, zardozi, and stone work make Sherwani more elegant and appealing.

A huge variety of colors are available to choose from. Bright colors like maroon, red, blue, green, magenta, purple, beige, brown, turquoise, violet, rust etc have a mass appeal while colors like white, orange, pink, light blue, light green, off white, golden, silver are also in demand.

Sherwani have got an international appeal and are slowly gaining market abroad. Recently Rohit Bal designed Sherwani for British Airways cabin crews serving on flights to South Asia. These incidents demonstrate how popular this outfit is outside of India. Celebrities have also taken a keen interest in popularizing the outfit. Music director A.R. Rehman’s appearance in a black Sherwani to receive an Academy Award made Sherwani famous all over the world. In coming days, Sherwani is ready to conquer the world market with its style and elegance.
