Anti embolism stockings, also known as TED stockings are used for patients who are immobile. It is generally prescribed by doctors to patients who have been suggested to rest on bed due to a surgery or any kind of injury to avoid deep vein thrombosis of DVT. These stockings are made of white fabric and they have an opening above or below the toe. This hole is just for checking whether blood is flowing properly to the feet.

Deep vein thrombosis is a fatal illness which refers to clotting of blood or thrombus in the veins of the lower leg muscles. One is advised to use ted anti embolism stockings under the following situations:

• If someone is bed-ridden.

• If someone is unable to walk without support.

• If someone is spending most of the days on chair or bed.

There are three types of anti-embolism stockings available in the market: knee length, thigh length and waist length types. It is extremely important to determine the right size for the patient as fitting plays an important role in such cases. Fitting determines the comfort level and the pressure on the limbs; if the thing is ill fitted then the whole purpose of wearing the stockings becomes meaningless.

However, there are certain dos and don’ts regarding the use of anti embolism stockings, which must be followed:

• Stockings should not be rolled downwards for it might restrict the flow of blood and cause serious injury.

• If the elastic material of the stocking causes any itches and rashes then it is necessary to consult a physician at haste.

• No greasy product like ointment or lotions should be used in places where wears anti embolism stockings as they reduce the efficiency of these stockings.

• The stockings should be opened and removed at least once in a day.

Thus, use the above information to make the best use of the anti embolism stockings.
