The Path to Becoming B737 Captain in Europe

Many of us wish to become a pilot or captain of an airline and enjoy the thrill of flying an airplane in their early childhood; only a few nurture their dream and bring it reality, while others forget and pursue different careers according to their aptitude and skills. For those who have nurtured their childhood dream of flying an airplane, the job of captain of Boeing737 or B737 in short, is one of the jobs they would be looking for after qualifying and fulfilling the prerequisites.

B737 captain job in Europe is regarded as one of the highest career positions in the aviation industry. It brings a lot responsibility besides a bestowing you with a great awe and respect among other flight staff and cabin crew working with you. It is highly demanding for an individual and can only be achieved after a lot of struggle and experience in flying. Any individual aspiring for this position has to undergo a lot of flight trainings, work as a pilot for years, and inculcate variety of qualities, such as quick decision making, etc., besides the technical and flying skills.

In this article, I will discuss how you can become a B737 captain by pursuing a career as a pilot.

The journey to becoming a real B737 captain starts from a flight training. Once you have decided to start a career in aviation industry as a pilot, you will have to start taking flying classes when you are eligible to take ones. Before starting the training, you must clear the medical fitness requirements. Then you start your training at a JAA training school if you are in Europe or at a FAA part 141 or a FAA part 61 training school if you are in United States. These schools may have both rigid and flexible curriculum. After completing the training, and passing the required tests, you can get rating and basic license to fly.

The license to fly will make you eligible for seeking employment with an airline company as a pilot. You may be hired as trainee pilot or co-pilot initially, and later on, after a few years experience, may be promoted to the rank of first officer. During you flying career, you will be experiencing flying in various conditions such as skies with fine sunset, or snowstorms, thunderstorms, gusty winds. Exposure to different situations will enhance your confidence in flying, which will help you take another step on the ladder of your career. In order to keep yourself up-to-date in your flying skills, you may need to acquired different licenses and certification, for example, CFI, CFII, MEI, ATP, and have various type ratings on different types of airplanes, e.g. BE1900, B737, and B757/767.

After flying as a first officer for many years, you may qualify for the position of B737 captain. It is not necessary that you keep working with same airline company in order to qualify for this position with the same company. It is wise to continuously look for new opportunities and job positions after spending a few years with one company. The airline companies advertize their vacancies for various positions including the positions of B737 Captain either directly, or through recruitment agencies outlining qualifications and experience for the position in context. If you meet their requirements, you can be offered you dream job, i.e. B737 captain.
