Work from Home and Be Successful
The benefits associated with working from home arrangements have been thoroughly discussed. Articles and blogs containing information on where to find home based earning opportunities as well as how to detect scams abound. In fact, many can be found in online sites like work-from-home.co.uk. These materials have likely convinced a number of individuals to seek working from home jobs or businesses. However, it is worth noting that obtaining one is different from maintaining it. The question is how to be successful in a home based job or business on a long term basis.
Overcome the Pitfalls
Needless to say, pitfalls accompany work at home arrangements. And in order to be successful, inherent difficulties will have to be properly addressed. The following should be considered:
1. Block out distractions. There are likely to be a lot of these especially when you have kids, pets, and your spouse at home. It is best to find a quiet place conducive to working within the confines of your home. Otherwise you will not get things done or the quality of your output will be affected. You will also have to be wary of personal calls, visitors, and household chores. You may schedule a time for all of these, which should not overlap with your “working time”. Proper scheduling is indeed needed to be able to be productive.
2. In a work from home setup, you do not have the luxury of having your supervisor and peers around for advice. Although the phone and email may compensate for this, sometimes personal interaction is necessary. For this purpose, you may try video conferencing. This is really necessary especially if you are working for an international company outside your country.
3. Since there is no one to supervise you, self discipline is required. There is no boss to pressure and motivate you. There are no officemates to provide you with ready assistance. Oftentimes, you will just be given the assignment and deadline, and it is up to you to comply. The need for discipline becomes more pronounced if one is to consider the several temptations lurking at home. The couch makes frequent and prolonged naps tempting. The fridge and cable TV are likely temptations as well. Though you can do whatever you want inside your house, to be prolific, you must have a sense of restraint.
4. You should get used to multitasking. This includes filing, scheduling, and recording. Remember, you do not have the luxury of having a clerk, secretary, and bookkeeper. Especially if you are managing a home based business, it is best to be hands-on to get the most favorable results. And this requires being able to function as the owner, procurement officer, salesman, warehouseman, bookkeeper, clerk, etc.
Professionalism is the Key
Whether you are a telecommuter, freelancer, or self-employed, the key to being successful when you work from home is maintaining a high level of professionalism. This applies to your work ethics as well as how you deal with people – your customers, suppliers, agents, etc.
