Will Food Continue to Be More Expensive in the Future?

Food prices are always going up and down so this is a regular event worldwide. But what does the future hold for food prices? Can we expect the prices to keep on rising, and if so, how can we handle this?

Most people would say that it is a negative point of view to assume the worst all the time. But in some cases it is best to think like this because it enables you to prepare better for the future.

This is certainly true when it comes to the price of food at the moment. The state of the economy has led to a real squeeze when it comes to our budgets in recent times, and it doesn’t look to be getting any better either.

Take coffee prices for example. These are higher now than they were in the past, but this is in line with many other foods as well. It is quite rare that you would find a food item today that costs less or even roughly the same as it did a few years ago. Food prices change regularly depending on various factors. Since these factors can change by the day it makes sense that we pay more or less for our foods depending on these factors.

In short it doesn’t matter whether you are thinking about the price of cocoa or about the prices of various other foods. It makes sense to assume the prices will increase and to budget for them as best you can. Many people shop according to a list, and in fact this is one of the best ways to reduce the amount you spend. You will be less tempted to buy items you don’t really need if you have a list to stick to.

Of course some items will always be on your list. If you drink tea you are likely to buy tea bags quite regularly. If you drink coffee then you will be affected by changing coffee prices. Even if you change brands regularly to try and keep the costs down when it comes to the price of cocoa and other items, you cannot completely control the amount you spend on such things.

It is not surprising therefore to learn that agri commodities can affect the situations in many countries worldwide. If you live in a country where coffee beans are harvested to be sent abroad, the economy of that country will be affected in various ways if the coffee beans drop in price. It might be good for people buying the beans, but it isn’t good for the people who are selling them.

Similarly agri commodities can go up in value if there is a lot of demand for them, making them more expensive in the process. This is the classic supply and demand model, and this is why the prices of foods will not necessarily keep on rising in line with inflation. Anything could – and literally does – happen in this area.
