In the middle of the flattest country in the world lies a small town called Deniliquin. It caught our attention, as it is currently the subject of a call for respondants to one of several transport tenders; this one for the re-sealing of the roads surrounding the township.

Deniliquin, or Deni as the locals call it is an important part of the cultural identity and history of Australia since white settlement. Situated on the Edward River and at the edge of the largest red gum forest in the world, Deniliquin is a fantastic spot for trekking the well developed network of forest trails as well as camping, kayaking, biking, bird watching, swimming, fishing or water-skiing. It was named after an Aboriginal local who was known for his boxing ability; Denilakoon.

Deni is also home to the Worlds Largest Ute Muster and the Play on the Plains Festival, both happening over the weekend of September 30 2011. Since it’s inception into the Guiness Book of World Records in 1999 it has been the largest gathering of legally registered utes in the world.

The festival, held over the weekend of September 30 and October 1 in 2011 hosts music acts such as Suzie Quattro, Icehouse, Guy Sebastian and Troy Casser-Daley. There is also an all ages section dedicated to family entertainment. The festival attracts around 18000 people and the cost for entry is $165 for adults and $85 for children over 13. Under 13s are free.

Deniliquin was settled by 1850 with the opening of the Post Office on January 1. It was quickly established as a wool growing area and in 1861 George Hall Peppin and his sons, experienced sheep breeders, established a merino stud at Wanganella Station. Most of Australia’s merinos today are said to be descended from these sheep. The town of Deniliquin is part of the area known as the Riverina, and is home to many Merino studs. The saltbush plains are regarded as one of Australia's best wool growing regions.

The Peppins sold to the Falkiner family headed by Franc in 1876 and the Falkiners held the properties, including Long Plains and Boonoke until 1971. The station is this year celebrating 150 years.

The tender currently open is for reconstruction of roads surrounding the Deniliquin township. Expressions of interest can be given for this and other roads and transport tenders at the relevant government website.
