The Use of Fixed Resistors
An electrical circuit is generally composed of a number of elements, which are all taken together in a single unit. It is not necessary that all these elements would require the same amount of electric current. It is always possible that some of the elements will require an amount of electric current, which is quite less than the actual input value. This can be possible only when the flow of electric current through the circuit is reduced with the use of fixed resistors. Such resistors have a resisting material, which is placed at the device’s centre, as well as a current conducting material that is found at its end portion.
It is of utmost importance that these resistors are easily identified when placed inside the circuit along with the other components. Hence, the color-coding as well as the numerical coding systems is essentially useful in this process of identifying the resistor. In order to calculate the value of these resistors, bands of different colors, usually four in number, are painted around them. The first two numbers of the colored bands signify the first two digits of the value of the resistor. The remaining two numbers of the bands function as the multiplier and tolerance value respectively.
These resistors can be categorized into three different kinds based on the type of resisting material found in them. These are sand filled resistors, wire wound resistors and metal oxide film resistors. The difference in the kinds of resisting material also results in the variation of power intake of these resistors. Moreover, difference in positive or negative tolerance can also cause variations in the different kinds of resistors. Nowadays, such resistor suppliers are being widely used in the electrical circuits found in refrigerators, big machines, radios, TVs and other such devices.
