Students Should Prepare for 2 Stages; Going for a Viewing and Viewing the Property in Edinburgh
When looking for a property in Edinburgh the most important thing is that you should have a clear idea of what you are looking for. Once you have this in your mind you are now in a position to contact a property agent, informing him/her of your choice of accommodation. Alternatively you can approach private landlords who advertise for their property in newspapers or internet.
You must also decide whether you want to rent out a place individually or you want to have a house/flat mate. If you want to have a housemate then you have got to find two things for you, a house plus a housemate perfect for you.
Viewing of the property: Most of the letting agents in Edinburgh will take you to view quite a few properties at once. You will be taken with several other students who might as well be interested in the same property. Hence, a sensible move is to always go with your chequebook or credit cards. So that the moment you like a property and you fear that someone else might grab it first, you quickly start negotiating. Moreover if you want to have a house/flat mate, you should always take him/her along. If you think a particular property is appropriate, you must still be patient and see some other properties as well. This will give you a pretty good idea of the types of accommodation available and their prices etc.
Going for a viewing: At this stage you should take into account all factors. Firstly, if you are renting the property in the form of a group or with some friend then you should make sure that they are present at the viewing. This will help you all to reach a unanimous decision. Secondly, you should always take a notebook and a pen at the viewing. You should make a note of all the things that you need to ask and check with regards to the property. Also you should use this to take notes that will be useful later on. Thirdly, always remember to take a camera with you. It can be used to take pictures of all the properties you visited and will help you remember all the properties you liked. Lastly, you should examine the property carefully and ask for gas safety certificate, fire detection equipment, burglar alarm, window and door locks etc.
