Soccer Moms and Minivans: Getting over the Cliché

Have you ever watched a TV show or a movie with a scene that involves a mom picking up her kid after soccer practice? Chances are, that mom was driving a minivan. Pop culture has always associated soccer moms with minivans for some reason. Have you ever wondered why?

Minivans rarely get respect if any. For years, car manufacturers have nurtured the soccer mom image in relation to minivans, and that image has stuck. Soccer moms and minivans are now inseparable ideas. If you go up to your friends right now and ask them what car they think soccer moms drive, almost all of them would say it is the minivans. The question is, is this cliché well-deserved, or is the minivan a victim of pigeon-holing?

If you think about it, minivans are better than other cooler models in almost every respect. People who have compared minivans with sports utility vehicles (SUV), for example, gave the former higher points with regard to legroom and passenger and luggage space. Minivans are cheaper than most models as well, with almost the same specs.

If you visit several sites on the Internet, you’ll come across car fora where people can air out their opinions about the car they’re driving, the cars they want to have, and many other things. Oddly enough, when minivan discussions start on these fora, people always say the same thing: Minivans are more efficient and practical than SUVs and other models, but it’s too much of a cliché, and that scares off most potential buyers.

Minivans are cheaper than most car models on the market today. Think about how much you’re going to save if you opt to choose among used vans. Dealerships all over the world sell used cars that are dealer-certified and only a few months to a couple of years old.

A Toyota Sienna, for example, boasts of a lot of space and great maneuverability. It can seat eight people, and is one of the best minivans in the market with regard to power, handling, and steering. Used car retailers offer a used Toyota Sienna, among other models.

Now, if you’re thinking of getting a new car for the family, or you want something more spacious and roomy than the car that you have right now, but are limited by budget constraints, considering used vans might be the way to go. Soccer mom or not, minivans will surely be the answer to your needs.
