A diesel particulate filter that is also known as DPF is a device that has been designed to get rid of diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. The wall-flow diesel particulate filters are capable of removing more than 80% of soot from a diesel vehicle. Not only that, in several occasions it has also been noticed that some of those wall-flow DPF can remove soot close to 100% or so. Depending on the purpose of usage, these diesel particulate filter can be categorized into two parts. Some filters are likely to be used to serve single purpose. They usually dispose the soot and work as replacement when full of accumulated ash.

There is another type of filter used by people nowadays, which is able to burn off the accumulated particles. Either they burn those particles off with the help of a catalyst or through the heat burners. This kind of filter is often described as filter regeneration too. Based on the efficiency, the filters can be classified into various parts such as ceramic fibre filters, metal fibre flow filters, cordierite filters, silicon carbide wall flow filters and many more. The advantage of using ceramic fiber filter is it has the remarkable feature of having low backpressure.

Another important device that is used to keep the pollution created by cars under control is the catalytic convertors. Restricting the amount of pollution that is produced by the vehicles this device helps to keep the environment clean and hygiene. The dangerous and harmful pollutants are converted into less harmful emissions by these converters. In order to do this a chemical reaction requires to be created. Converters create the same by using a catalyst and then help to produce less harmful substances. These converters can only be sued when the engines are hot as this device works in high temperatures only.
