The rodents feed on seeds which are found in abundance, as an indirect result caused a dramatic increase in its population. It is thought that the action of the rats is a mechanism for ecological control. Rodents feed on the seeds of canebamboo flowering cycle out, reinforcing the disproportionate rate of this release marked a year to year variation in seed production (known in English as amast year ). Some experts believe that the flower has a positive effect on the fertility of rodents as well as the increased amount of waste thereof. All explanations indicate that the increase in rat population occurs as an effect of the flowering of bamboo.

However, once the rats eat the excess food they turn their attention to the fields. There is evidence from the British Raj indicate that Mizoram suffered famine in 1862 and in 1911, after the region witnessed similar bamboo flowerings. In both cases, the data suggest that bamboo flowering resulted in an increase of the local population of rats. This led to attacks on granaries and destroying paddy fields , and a famine consecutive one year.

The mautam of 1958-1959 resulted in the deaths of at least one hundred people, besides considerable material damage and crops. Some elderly people to remember this event say that the government of Assam , which then ruled the current state of Mizoram, dismissed his warnings based on old traditions when considered superstitious. It is estimated that around two million rats were killed and harvested by people, having decreed a booty of 40 paisa per head (about 1 ¢ USD according the current exchange rate). Despite having noticed the increase in the rodent population, the government had very limited actions to prevent a famine.

This neglect led to the foundation of the Mizo National Front Against Famine, created to bring relief to those remote regions, the front then took the name of Mizo National Front , which was led by Prime Minister of Mizoram, Pu Laldenga , who would to lead a separatist struggle for twenty years against the Indian Army until 1986, when he signed an agreement guaranteeing the autonomy of Mizoram as a separate state.

The government of Prime Minister of Mizoram Pu Zoramthanga took precautionary measures for two years before mautam 2006. However, in June 2006, the Indian army went into action as an emergency measure to assist the state administration to reach remote areas. The State Government took measures such as planting of various agricultural products for local culture and education inpest control by the army. He promoted the use of growing turmeric and ginger in order to serve as insurance against variations in purchasing power, and also because the spices repel attacks by rodents.
