Tooth decay or the process of teeth decaying is one that leads to cavities and caries. This process occurs when the teeth in your mouth are eaten away by acid that is formed by bacteria. It should, thus, be noted that the process of decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth, which produces acid that then eats the teeth. Decay of the teeth is undesirable, since it can lead to various things, especially if it is not attended to quickly. Some of the things that it causes include pain, tooth loss and infections among others. In this regard, it is advisable that the condition is treated as soon as it is noticed.

In order to, properly identify the condition, we need to, clearly understand how it is caused. As has been noted, decay is caused by bacteria. Research has established that bacteria in the mouth, if combined with food particles can cause decay. It is particularly essential to note that plaque, a clear bacterial substance is always forming in the mouth. When the bacteria in the mouth are feeding on the food that you have eaten, they keep forming acids. Twenty minutes after you have eaten, this acid id believed to start attacking the teeth. With time, the acid will destroy the enamel, thus, causing decay.

It is essential to remember that the condition does not have any clear symptoms. The only time that you will notice it is when you have a tooth that is already infected, or a cavity. By this time, you will probably also experience toothache. It is, therefore, vital that you try to prevent the condition as much as probable, since you will have no way to tell that you have it, up to when it is too late. The best and most recommended manner of preventing decay is to brush your teeth after eating. This will ensure that the bacteria does not have food feed on, thus, not producing acids that cause decay.

In case you notice that you have the disorder, you should immediately go for a checkup. The dentist will have the capacity of diagnosing the decay by taking x-rays and thoroughly examining your teeth. This is the only way that he will tell you how bad the decay really is. Having established that your teeth have decayed, the dentist will go ahead and recommend a course of treatment. If the decay has caused cavities, your dentist will probably recommend filling. However, if the decay is severe, you might be due for a root canal or crown. The dentist might also have to remove your teeth in extreme circumstances. Therefore, the best way to tell if you have the condition is to visit your dentist for a checkup.

Overall, tooth decay is a condition that is caused by bacteria eating food. The best way to prevent this condition is to, thoroughly brush your teeth or floss after meals. This will help to remove excess food from the mouth, thus, ensuring the safety of your teeth.
