A number of students in Edinburgh live in University halls for the very first year but in the years to come they move to other choices and majority of them opt for the Edinburgh flats to rent option. In a majority of cases a number of students rent flat in Edinburgh and share the expenses and responsibilities that come with it.

Ground rules

Once you rent flat in Edinburgh with a group of students, it is important that you take steps to ensure that your home runs smoothly. For this purpose you all must jointly write down house rules at the start of the tenancy and prominently display them in the house.

Take steps to ensure that everybody is crystal clear about the terms of the tenancy. This will include; the duration of the tenancy agreement, their share of the rent, the date that when it will be due and how it is to be paid. Also you must set up individual standing orders to pay the rent directly into the bank account of the Landlord or Letting Agent. This will ensure that there are no arguments between housemates when one pays the rent and has to get it back off the others. You will all have to share the costs of the essential’s, these include bills, cleaning supplies, toilet rolls and the basic foods such as tea, coffee milk, sugar etc. Decide how these are to be met. Also you should decide on what kind of a household you are going to be. Whether it’s going to be more independent or more as a group? Whether you all are going to eat together and make use of any communal living rooms.

In case of Edinburgh flats to rent as a group there are several other factors that you need to look into. For example, you must ensure that the bills are in joint names. This will prevent one person being chases for the payment. Importantly, also decide at the start of the tenancy if smoking will be allowed in the house. Also make rules regarding late night parties in the house i.e. only on weekends.

It is important that you take care of these factors at the beginning to ensure that your tenancy term passes smoothly.
