# Inductors- the Most Common Electrical Components with Electromagnetic Coils

One of the most simple and common electrical components that exist, are electromagnetic coils. These coils are also called inductors and are made of a simple wire that has been electrically insulated. The wire is looped in to a shape, preferably cylindrical or disk shaped in order to complete the electric circuit and provide inductance. This is done because the inductor has the capacity to store energy in its magnetic field. The two main parts of an electromagnetic coil are the core and the conductor. A solid copper is usually used to make the conductor whereas the core is made up of a solid metal. The number of times the wire is looped around the core is called the number of turns and cores with various turns are called coils.

These coils have terminals, also called taps, which are connected to the wire and this connection is important for a circuit to function. These taps or terminals are well covered with insulation tapes or varnished with paint to keep the electricity from going out of the coils. Winding is the electromagnetic field that has taps on both of its ends. The way and the technique the electromagnet coil functions have been explained by Faraday’s Law of induction.

These coils are so common that they are present in almost every electronic device. Their most general use is to create magnetic fields and thus they are used inside an electronic oscillator as inductors. Henries is the mathematical term used to measure the inductance of a certain coils and is done by an equation that involves calculating the number of turns in the coil and the substance with which the core has been made. Cross section of turns and the length of the coil also help in determining the inductance of these coils.
