Green environment is everybody’s concern whether you have a car or not. Of course driving itself is to be avoided but that is not always possible in practice and there are number of ways to help the environment by being smarter when using the car. It’s called Ecodriving.

Ecodriving means smarter and more fuel-efficient driving. Ecodriving represents a new driving culture that makes best use of advanced vehicle technologies, while improving road safety. An important component of sustainable mobility, Ecodriving considerably contributes to climate protection and pollution reduction.

Using eco-friendly manufactured tyres, such as Nokian’s Hakka tyres is one step towards greener planet but also using the tyres the right can help a lot. Another step is to check your tyre pressure. Under-inflated tyres increase fuel consumption. Over inflated tyres have lower grip. Checking the tyre pressure once a month is a good habit and will help you both save fuel as well inform you of any tyre damage early enough to change tyres when it’s necessary.

While driving, you should anticipate the traffic flow. This means reading the road as far ahead as possible and anticipating what will happen. It also means acting instead of reacting. An increased safety distance equivalent of about 3 seconds to the car in front optimizes the options to balance speed fluctuations in traffic flow – enabling steady driving with constant speed.

Also changing gears between 2,000 to 2,500 RPM in order to keep your engine speed as low as possible is good for fuel consumption.

If you are driving high speeds on a motorway, windows should be kept close. Even one open window increases fuel consumption. Also use air-conditioning sparingly, especially in the city. You should also turn off the engine when the car is at a standstill, for example in a traffic jam or at a railway crossing, if it is safe to do so.

Another way to cut down your consumption is to drive light. Extra weight increases fuel consumption and polluting emissions. Also remove unused accessories like roof racks and luggage carriers, which create aerodynamic drag.
