Hedges and Shrubs Beneficial for Wild Life and Yards

Hawthorn hedge is a plant and its known by its dark smooth and glowing green leaves and white scented flowers that are mostly seen in spring season.Other names of hawthorn hedge are quick-thorn, May thorn, May blossom or May flower because it has thorns and produces flowers in spring season that mostly come in May. In wild life it is regarded as an announcer of spring because its small buds appear in the beginning of spring and within few days this plant flourishes and blooms with white scented flowers and red fruits that provide nourishment to local birds like wren, starlings, redwings blue tits and black birds.

Hawthorn hedge is a food source for numerous species of insects approximately 200 species of insects get nourishment from this plant. Its leaves have 3-7 lobes and it grows from 9-12 inches so it must be trimmed weekly in autumn season. This hedge can grow in every climate and is regarded very helping for plant life or wild life. Its dense branches and thorns are used to build nests.

Laurel hedge is another useful hedge ideal for wild life. Laurel hedging plant consists of long glossy green leaves and clusters of small white flowers. Laurel hedges are pruned in spring season or in the ending of summer. It’s an evergreen robust hardy plant that grows in every climate but preferably in areas where sun light reaches redundantly. This plant can grow up-to 20 feet if left untrimmed.

Laurel hedging includes common laurel, cherry laurel, Japanese laurel and Portuguese laurel. Japanese laurel tolerate shady areas and can grow up to 7-10 feet high. Red berries are also grown on laurel hedges in autumn but are very harmful for health if eaten. Annual growth rate of laurel hedge is 40-60 cm and it needs full sun or partially shaded areas to grow well. It is usually selected for seaside gardens and yards.

Privet hedge is generally referred as “Ligustrum shrub” as it is strongly linked with ligustrum genus. As the plant varieties linked to this specie vary so it depends on the climate and plant type to be an evergreen plant, semi-evergreen or plant that grows and shed timely. Kinds of plants included in privet hedges are Common, Golden, Japanese and Chinese privet shrubs.

It is an evergreen plant but becomes semi-evergreen in harsh winters and loses its leaves and then blooms again in spring season. Dark green leaves and white creamy flowers are its identity. It’s a very popular choice to create impenetrable barriers. Privet hedge grows very fast and reaches up to the height of 30 cm so it must be trimmed after a small interval. It is widely planted in urban and suburban gardens because it is strongly pollution resistant.
