Hard-Sided vs Soft-Sided Luggage: Which Camp are You On?

Most travelers experience that moment of panic when they’re standing beside the airport’s conveyor belt while waiting for their baggage to show. The reason for this panic is because they dread two possible scenarios: one, their bag would arrive dented or slashed open with their underwear hanging out; or two, their bag wouldn’t show at all. Either of these possibilities constitutes every traveler’s nightmare, which is why steps have to be taken to prevent it.

Choosing the best type of luggage for you and the way you travel is a great place to start preventing potential problems. When you have the right type of baggage, chances are you wouldn’t have to worry about those pesky baggage fees or lost luggage. There are several considerations, though, when choosing what type of luggage you’re going to carry. One of the first questions that every traveler has to answer is: hard-sided or soft?

The debate about what is best between hard-sided and soft-sided luggage has been going on for years, and though most people prefer the latter, hard-sided luggage still has a loyal following. But what exactly do these two have to offer? Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Hard-Sided Luggage

Airport personnel break around seven to eight pieces of luggage for every thousand items they handle—this might not be a big figure but it’s not something most people would risk. This is where hard-sided luggage comes in handy—their tough outer shell protects everything in it, which is why hard-sided types like Rimowa luggage are preferred by people carrying computers and other sensitive equipment. These luggages aren’t very flexible though, which might stop you from stuffing in that extra beach towel.

Soft-Sided Luggage

This type, represented by famous manufacturers like Tumi luggage, is preferred by most people for two reasons. The first is that it is easier to pack with soft-sided luggage because they are more flexible; the second is that this type doesn’t crack or shatter when dropped. The only drawback is the contents aren’t as well-protected, and broken zippers and rips are common occurrences.

Whatever type you choose, be sure to buy only from trustworthy stores. Make sure that the Rimowa or Tumi luggage sale you’re stopping by at sell real Rimowa or Tumi products. Getting substandard luggage might result in a lot of problems down the road.

Whether you choose soft-sided Tumi or hard-sided Rimowa luggage, remember that how long these would last depend on how you use and take care of them.
