Fake turf first gained notoriety in 1966 with its installation in the Houston Astrodome, an indoor stadium. Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN was the first to install a fake playing surface in their outdoor Memorial Stadium. Since then, the application and use of fake lawn has increased geometrically. While, historically, people associate fake turf with flat phony looking green or imitation grass, today’s product can look and feel like the genuine article.

One might think that producing a fake lawn or turf is a simple process; however, today’s leading edge manufacturers of these products employ the results of decades of research as well as the opportunitiesthat arise from major technological advances within both the plastics industry and manufacturing technologies. There are several “layers” within fake turf. At the bottom is a specially designed drainage system that ensures that water will quickly soak into and be moved from the surface. Next is the backing system that includes multiple layers of various crushed stone. This area of the turf is designed to create the feel of being on a lawn, instead of concrete or other hard surface. Finally, the individual blades, made usually from polypropylene and polyethylene, are “in filled” within a mixture of sand or recycled tire rubber that has been finely granulated. This give the appearance and feel of real grass planted in soil.

Sports field managers find that fake turf is a good investment, particularly when a resilient, durable and cost effective grass field is required. Fake turf becomes the field of choice in particularly arid climates. The product’s durability allows a sports field to be used much more often, and it is not impacted by the weather. It is also known for being very low maintenance. The fake turf allows the appearance of the field to be beautiful all of them time rather than just sometimes. This is much better than having a field that is partially torn up or dead looking from a lack of rain.

With the true look and feel of authentic lawns, sports fields aren’t the only places you’ll see a fake lawn. This product is an environmentally and economically smart choice. Many home owners are installing fake lawns.Dandelions are no longer the bane of existence for gardeners. The home owner no longer needsto spend time and sweat mowing and maintaining the perfect lawn.

In fact, fake lawns and fake turfs are positively affecting the environment. The Environmental Protection Agency reported that in 2010 fake turfs saved the equivalent of the water usage of between 2,000 & 40,000 U.S. families of four. This equates from 3 to 6 million gallons per year. As our society works to become greener, fake turf and fake lawns are the wave of the future. Anything we can do to preserve resources should be done if at all possible.
