Bitumen emulsion centered cold mixing, involves coating the aggregate in a bitumen emulsion in water. This emulsion is organically fluid at ambient temperature, therefore no heat is needed in the mixing, which is a fragile procedure developed to guarantee that the bitumen emulsion does not ‘smash’ into its constituent elements – bitumen and water – until it is laid on the pavement.

Expert cold mix plant enables several levels of combination to be very well blended together before a changeable spray bar produces the binder. grim ‘folding’ then guarantees the bitumen emulsion coats the stone without splitting.

The material can be used for binder layers, overlays and even sporting courses for anything but the heaviest trafficked roads.

Cold blend asphalt can be laid in exactly the same manner as hot – straight through a paving machine – but the rolling that follows is particularly critical to the way the bitumen emulsion works. Particularly designed cold mixture technology based on emulsions and compounds (known as NYREC and NYMIX) is compaction with a combo of vibratory and pneumatic-tyred rollers which makes the bitumen emulsion to split, creating the bitumen and giving the water run out.

Typically, a cold mixture asphalt layer can be trafficked immediately after placing; however the mixture does go on to get power gradually. Once laid, it looks and works a bit different from hot mix – one of the factors the procedure has not been followed as rapidly as it might have done. Cold combination is usually assessed with procedures that are appropriate for hot mixes but do not show the performance of cold mix.

Common performance factors are rigidness and void content, neither of which a true measure of the behavior of a cold mix pavement is layer. Endeavors are now being done to deal with this, by putting together a cold mix design, and techniques of evaluation that can become the base for future specifications are being developed.

The 2nd important stumbling block to the uptake of cold mix is financial. A lot of contractors have immense amounts of money spent in hot mix plants, desire to maximize these investments and find it difficult to consider cold mix.

Turning from hot to cold mix can substantially minimize energy bills and CO2 pollutants, as the quantity of energy needed to heat the components in cold mix is minute in comparison with hot mix. Generally, only about 0.1 litres of fuel is required to deliver one tonne of cold mixed asphalt compared with between 10 and 14 litres of fuel per tonne of hot mix.

An additional environmental driver for the use of cold mix is the requirement to maximise the use of recycled road planings, or Recycled Asphalt Pavements (RAP). Among Nynas’ range of bitumen emulsion is NYREC, which was made specially for use with RAP.

Emulsion-based cold mixtures let a far higher fraction of reused substance to be integrated into the mix than is feasible with hot mixes. Even a cold mix binder layer can very efficiently be produced using RAP for the full integral content. Emulsions can also coat planings that are infected with tar.
