Commercial Refrigerator: How to Tell Good from Bad

By JC Tolentino Subscribe to RSS | June 18th 2012 | Views:

Perhaps, one of the most important appliances of today is the refrigerator. But then, refrigerators have already been playing its important role in our kitchens for a very long time. Through time, refrigerators have evolved and have already come in various types, styles, and sizes. One of the many types of refrigerators is the commercial refrigerator.

But what is a commercial refrigerator and what is its difference from a residential unit? As implied by its name, commercial refrigerators are usually used in commercial establishments like restaurants and hotels that require a much larger storage space compared to any household. But of course, if you happen to own a restaurant or a hotel that needs the refrigeration functions of a commercial refrigerator, you want your commercial unit to be energy efficient and easy to work in. As much as with any products and services, there are good refrigerators and also bad ones. But with a lot of refrigerators nowadays that continuously flock the market, there might be a chance that you end up buying the wrong one for you.

One pretty obvious factor to determine a good refrigerator from a bad one is its price. Commercial refrigerators are indeed one of the most expensive equipments in your business. And a good refrigerator usually comes with a very high price. This is usually reflected by its high quality features and state of the art functionality. Although it seems to be pretty heavy on your pocket, your commercial refrigerator helps protect another expensive investment in your business- your perishable stocks of food.

An Energy Star labeled commercial refrigerator is obviously among the good ones. If you have spotted a commercial refrigerator with such label, it's probably one of the best choices for you. Units with such labels are more energy efficient than those without it. Why? Because these refrigerators are usually equipped with ECM evaporator, condenser fan motors, high efficiency compressors, or hot gas anti-sweat heaters which are very well capable of reducing energy consumption and monthly bills. In as much as 35% of energy savings is provided by an Energy Star Commercial Refrigerator. Furthermore, with a newer Energy Star specification for commercial refrigerators, over 30% of energy savings can be achieved.

Kitchens in commercial establishments are more likely to be a complicated and busy environment. Especially in peak hours where more impatient customers are demanding for a fast service, employees in your kitchen can barely spare a time closing those huge doors of your refrigerator. In this case, you might want to have a unit with self-closing doors. With such doors, you are assured that your refrigerator is always closed after every use. Unclosed doors or even partially opened ones can greatly affect on the cooling results expected from your refrigerator.

Aside from the ones mentioned above, there are still a lot of factors that need to be considered to help you choose a good refrigerator rather than a bad one. As said earlier, commercial refrigerators usually come in high prices so you might want to put some extra vigilance upon choosing the best unit for your business needs.
