Commemorating the African American Contribution through the Black History Month

Every year USA and Canada observe Black History Month in the month of February. In the UK, however, the same is celebrated in October. Also known as the African American month, it traces its origins back to 1926 when this month was chosen as the Negro History Week owing to the birthday of famous African American personalities.

The objective behind observing a special month like this was primarily to promote knowledge and awareness of black history, culture and literature, spread awareness about the positive contribution of the African Americans in various societies. Several famous african americans who are eminent personalities in their own league promote and support these objectives to help the community learn and grow from each other’s experience. Several events are organized throughout the month to commemorate the special occasion. These events help to highlight the contributions made by these people that have impacted world events. The community through this special month intends to highlight the Today in Black history. They would like showcase to the world how they have progressed through the ages and where they have positioned themselves today.

In 2012 the theme for Black History Month was Black Women in American Culture and History. Through this they have highlighted the contributions and the roles that black women played in the African American society and the world as a whole. Multiple websites display relevant information on the events to be organized on that month, the theme and several other facts. Users can visit these sites and be abreast of the happening of this special month. These websites also highlight biographies of the major people; even posts quizzes and crosswords. All this is an endeavor to promote awareness and announce today in Black history.
