When we talk about banks, the first thing that comes to our minds is the financial institutions that lends and stores money. Now, there is a new type of bank called the biobank which is related to human body parts as the name suggests. These are organizations that accumulate various samples of human fluids and tissues, amass them in a scientific manner and classify them. Finally, the samples are handed over to researchers and academic medical institutions to be used later for different reasons. The samples which are mostly preserved are blood, skin, bone, tumors, placentas, organs and every other portion of a body which is collected from patients.

The catalogs that are used in the website of biobanksbiobanks or at the reception of it use the genetic characters like age, gender, blood type and customs. They may be also differentiated by the environmental factors such as climate, weather etc; as donated by the donor based on if it has been donated in conditions like their exposure to radiation, asbestos, or some other substance that can affect human genes. It should also be mentioned that the names of the donor is never specified on the specimen collected.

Researchers find these biobanks a boon for their experiments. Whatever genetic traits are needed for their studies are easily found here. The specimens collected are more helpful towards the development of personalized medicine. In more recent times, governments of various countries like Iceland, Estonia has come up with biobanks of their own. There are various private organizations that are also setting up such institutions. The ones produced by the pharmaceutical companies and university laboratories meant for exclusively their own works are called "mini-collections".

As the concept of biobanksbiobanks is quite new, there are certain laws mentioned in various countries to prevent any smuggling or mishandling of the specimens. The specimens are also stored well scientifically and destroyed straight away after they have expired.
