A Boat CE Marking Can Make Sailing More Fun and Safe

All imported recreational crafts—even those still being built for sale—either used for sports or leisure purposes must secure CE markings before they can be sailed in European waters. This includes all boats with hull length between 2.5 and 24 metres, regardless of the means of propulsion. A CE mark is proof of compliance with the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) which authorizes the operation of these boats throughout the European Union.

The directive contains requirements regarding exhaust and noise emissions. For exhaust emissions, which include carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and particles which affect human health and the environment, the RCD imposes limit values based on the type of engine used on the craft. For noise emissions, limit values are based on the engine power.

Aside from exhaust and noise emissions, several safety requirements must also be complied with before a CE marking is issued. This includes the structural integrity of the boat, handling characteristics, and installation requirements. Another essential requirement is the presence of fire-fighting equipment suitable for the fire hazard associated with the particular boat.

There are many other requirements including various paperwork that need be fulfilled before a CE marking can be granted. Each boat must be personally and thoroughly inspected, a process that could take a number of days to even weeks to finalize. It is only after the process has been completed that a CE mark is given to certify that the boat has passed European standards for human safety and environmental protection requirements.

A boat CE marking is a complex process which requires expertise and proper documentation. It is a legal requirement for any imported boats to be used in any European waterway. For boats routed through EEA countries other than the U.K. or Holland, it is best to have the CE marking done in the U.S. before it reaches European territory.

While most people may consider a boat CE marking to be just a bureaucratic imposition which must be complied with, it can actually be a good marketing tool in the resale of your boat. You may spend good money to acquire the marking, but the investment can provide you with more than adequate returns in the resale value of the craft. It is worth all the inconveniences it may have caused you to get it.

Many companies offer their services to provide a boat CE marking. The costs for such services vary depending on where the inspection is to be conducted performed. The expenses include travel, certification fees, and other charges connected with the assessment process. However, they are necessary expenditures which you can’t avoid if you wish to sail or to sell imported boats in Europe.
