How to Ensure Your Entire Home Receives a Clear Wi-Fi Signal

With a range of products and devices in the home needing some form of signal to operate properly, it is not uncommon for Wi-Fi signals to get weakened by the sheer volume of signals permeating our homes these days. But what can you do if your Wi-Fi signal is weakened due to mobile phone and digital TV signals? Luckily, there are a few things.

The first thing to try doing is moving your router to a more central position in your home. The signal from a wireless router is projected in a circle so having it located near a outside wall at the front of your home could be sending more than half of the available signal out and away from your computers and other wireless-compatible devices.

If you still receive weakened signal coverage after moving your router, try running a broadband speed test to see exactly how fast your connection is. It is wise to run this kind of test at different times of the day to get an accurate reading. The peak time for internet use is early evening so if you find that your connection is slow from 5pm until 7 or 8pm, this could explain why.

You can also change your router's channel to see if that has a positive affect on your signal. There are free tools available online that can scan your wireless signal channel and inform you of how many other routers nearby are set to that channel. If there are a lot of routers using the same channel, check the user manual for your router to find out how to change your router.

Have you checked to see if there is a firmware update available for your router? Just like computer programmes and operating systems, occasionally the software for routers is updated to run more efficiently. Visit the website of your router manufacturer and see if there are any updates available for your router model. Often these updates are just quick fixes to minor problems, but improvements to connectivity are not uncommon. Install and restart your router and you could see your wireless has greatly improved.

If your router is more than a year old, you may want to contact your internet service provider (ISP) and see if they are willing to send you a newer model. You may have to pay for shipping and delivery but many providers will supply you with the latest router or hub for free.

If none of these tips work, then it is worth considering paying for a booster antenna for your router. These antennae enhance the wireless signal your router emits over a certain distance.
