Some of the Best Sports Novels You’ve Never Heard Of

If you have a dedicated sports fan in your life, or just happen to be one, and already own pretty much every book out there on sports this is a list for you. We’ve compiled some of the best sports novels, in no particular order, that you’ve never heard of. So kick off the cleats and spend some time with a good read!

Paper Lion by George Plimpton

After writing Out of My League, where the author himself took on the question of how an average man would fare against baseball stars, Plimpton takes this idea all the way to the end zone. Paper Lion is the story of how Plimpton joined the 1963’s Detroit Lions training camp to show how unlikely the “average” person would succeed as a pro football player.

Filled with memorable insight into the personalities of players and coaches, especially linebacker Wayne Walker, quarterback Milt Plum and more, it’s an extraordinary backstage look into professional football. For fans of the book, the author also took similar takes in golf and ice hockey which are also some of the best novels about sports you can find.

Muscle by Sam Fussell

One of the biggest tropes of our times is the age old nerd gets kicked around nerd gets revenge. In this case, the nerd is 26 year old Oxford educated Samuel Fussell. Having been kicked around New York he enters into a YMCA gym to bulk up and winds up getting hooked into the intense training. Muscle takes you through the startling world of body building with its “Health Fascists,” Gym Bunnies” and more. It offers a boldly honest and often hilarious account of the single minded pursuit of physical perfection.

SportsFan Chroniclesby Kurt Weichert

SportsFan Chronicles is the story of two successful best friends who come into any football fans most desired but unlikely event: a chance to own a team from the NFL. The novel, as one of the most hilarious and best sports fiction books you can find, is a self-proclaimed mash up of Entourage and Animal House.

For anyone who has ever secretly wished this or who is looking for a comedic take into the lives of major sports fanatics, it’s worth a read. And considering that this is the start of a series that means there are only more fun adventures for the main characters to have.

Pigskin Rabbi by Willard Manus

If you have even an ounce of love for Judaism, know how powerful professional sports are for molding public opinion and just love a damn good laugh, then this book is for you. Especially if you’re a sports fan who can see just how nutty fellow fans can be!

Through a series of unusual events, Ezekiel “Ziggy” Cantor becomes the superstar quarterback of the New York Giants. Following in the wake of his unbelievable playing, his teammates become convinced of the luck of the Jewish. Pigskin Rabbi is one of the best sports fiction books when it comes to an over the top story of unforgettable characters and satire on sports. No matter your faith, it’s sure to leave you in stitches.
