Spearfishing is an ancient method of fishing that has been used throughout the world for millennia. Early civilizations were familiar with the custom of spearing from rivers and streams using sharpened sticks. Spearfishing with barbed poles (harpoons) was widespread in Palaeolithic times. Cave art over 16,000 years old contains drawings of seals which appear to have been harpooned.

Spearfishing is an ancient method of fishing and may be conducted with an ordinary spear or a specialized variant such as an eel spear or the trident. A small trident type spear with a long handle is used in the American South and Midwest for gigging bullfrogs with a bright light at night, or for gigging carp and other fish in the shallows.

Traditional spear fishing is restricted to shallow waters, but the development of the spear gun allows fishing in deeper waters. With practice, divers are able to hold their breath for up to four minutes and sometimes longer; of course, a diver with underwater breathing equipment can dive for much longer periods.

Today modern spearfishing makes use of elastic powered spear guns and slings, or pneumatic powered spear guns to strike the hunted fish. Specialized techniques and equipment have been developed for various types of aquatic environments.

Spearfishing may be done using free-diving, snorkeling, or scuba diving techniques. Note that the use of mechanically powered spear guns is outlawed in some countries and jurisdictions. Spearfishing is highly selective, normally uses no bait and has no by-catch.

The high quality Rob Allen spearfishing equipment is designed to outperform its competitors on every front and its awesome reputation is testament to this. The guns are durable, incredibly accurate and offer far superior firepower. While being highly customizable to cater for all forms of spearfishing.

All of the new equipment is based on feedback driven designs from some of the top spears around the world. So you know any purchase you make has been made by spear fishermen for spear fishermen. You can be 100% confidence in the knowledge that when you purchase a Rob Allen product you are getting the very best spearfishing fins on the market. Spearfishing snorkels and diving masks are similar to those used for scuba diving. Gloves are valuable to spear fishermen who desire to maintain a sense of safety or access more dangerous areas, such as those between corals that could otherwise not be reached easily.
