Located just 8km west of the city of Malaga, the city’s Pablo Ruiz Picasso Airport, to give it its correct title, is Spain’s fourth busiest airport, with around 12 million visitors passing through every year.

Passengers

One of Spain’s oldest airports, it began operating international civil passenger flights in 1946, having previously been a military base. It is the main gateway to the Costa del Sol. The airport provides easy access to Andalucia and the popular destinations of Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella and Gibraltar to the west of Malaga and Nerja and Granada in the east.

Destinations

The international airport provides flight connections to more than 60 destinations worldwide, which accounts for 85% of the area’s international traffic. Offering daily flights to 20 Spanish cities and over 100 throughout Europe, the airport also connects with Africa, the Middle East and North America during the summer months.

Terminals

With three terminals, the third of which was opened in March 2010 by the King of Spain, travellers can check-in at 164 desks and depart through 48 boarding gates, 26 of which are connected to the terminal with air bridges.

There is also a General Aviation Terminal, used for private jets, air schools and taxis, etc. and a cargo terminal, which has four cold storage rooms, an area for hazardous and radioactive materials, a vault for valuable merchandise and 16 road transport vehicle docking bays.

A second runway is currently undergoing construction, with completion expected for the start of 2012. A taxi or shuttle bus will take you to a nearby Malaga Airport hotel in just a few minutes.
