Europe’s Airline Hub

Switzerland’s largest airport, the Geneva International Airport, has been a hub of passenger and freight operations in Europe since 1920. Spread over a total area of 340 hectares, this airport’s single runway is almost 4000 metres long and is equipped with an ILS Category III system. The main runway is supplemented by a 700-metre turf runway for small aircraft. The unique feature of this airport is that it supports three countries: Switzerland, France and Italy.

Passengers and Freight Operations

The Geneva International Airport handles about 12 million passengers each year although the 2,200-square metre terminal has a capacity of 15 million travellers a year. As it operates 79 airlines with flights to over 120 destinations, the airport continues to grow. According to its 2007-2015 Master Plan, the airport is expected to complete expansions required to handle 20 million passengers by the year 2020. The 45 boarding lounges and 55 aircraft parking areas make this one of the largest and busiest airports in close proximity to Geneva Airport hotel rooms. The airport also has a 2,200-square metre warehouse with a freight handling capacity of 100,000 tons per year. The airport handles 60,000 tonnes of cargo a year from Africa, North America, Asia and Europe.

Governance and Certifications

Certified to accommodate the super-jumbo Airbus A380, the Geneva International Airport terminal is able to handle over a 1000 departures in a week. Each year, the airport brings in revenue of over 258 million pounds. Known for its efficiency, this Independent Public Establishment enterprise boasts some of the fastest passenger and freight processing times in the world.
