Growth

Even though it is small with only one runway, Florence Airport handles over two million passengers a year. It was created in the early 1930s for the military and not until the 1940s were civilian and commercial flights introduced. In the 1980s it was renovated and expanded as the number of travellers grew. New departure and arrival buildings were constructed in the 1990s, the runway was extended by 250 metres, and a car park was added. Florence Airport Flights are either domestic or within Europe, serving 35 destinations.

Terminals

Florence Airport, also known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport, boasts two main terminals. One deals with arrivals, the second with departures, and both handle international and domestic flights. There are 19 check-in desks and six gates, serving a large number of airlines. The terminals at Florence Airport were upgraded in 2003 so that the airport can now handle over two million passengers per year.

Facilities

There is no Florence Airport hotel at the terminal, but the city centre is only a few kilometres away, where a variety of Florence Airport hotels are available and which cater to any budget. There is a taxi service and the airport is also connected by bus service to Santa Maria Novella railway station in the city centre. Other facilities at the airport include duty free shops, banking, bureau de change, cafés, business facilities, and internet access, and many disabled facilities are provided. There is a tourism desk in the airport where visitors can get information on accommodation, sightseeing and transport to the city and back.
