Water is the element of life, but there are numerous instances when it can spell trouble for us. One particular aspect where water plays a spoil sport is in our home maintenance is leakage and seepage. Water leakage can lead to fungi and mold formation, deteriorate our steel construction, weaken the structure, cause infestation, destroy the aesthetic appearance, etc. Thus, protection of our home from these adverse effects of water leakage is necessary. Three ways by which we can protect our homes not only from water but also from other natural and man-made elements like rough weather, sunlight and pollution is by waterproofing, rendering and painting the exterior walls. Each of these three methods involves the use of experience and expertise knowledge of application and so for the best results; it is highly recommended that one contacts a professional for these works.

In home construction, a structure needs to be waterproofed as the concrete, brick, wood or other materials used to build homes is not water resistant or watertight. To make the structure watertight special coatings or layers of membrane of water resistant material is applied. Bitumen, silicates, siloxane sealants, PVC, EPDM, etc. are the traditional membranes that provide protection to buildings from water. But technological advances in this field have made it possible to mix additives in the concrete itself giving it waterproofing properties. Two types of such integral waterproofing systems exist: the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic systems. In the hydrophilic system, crystallization technology helps replace water in the concrete into insoluble crystals. In the hydrophobic systems, fatty acids are used to block the pores and prevent passage of water. Two of the most important areas where waterproofing is essential are the roof and the basement.

Render is a mixture of sand, cement and lime plaster that is applied to the exterior walls of a house made from stones, bricks, cement blocks, etc. Rendering can be done both to the exterior as well as interior walls. Mixing of various additives to the render mixture gives it enhanced properties like:

• Increased water resistivity

• Better flexibility

• Enhanced adhesiveness

• Prevents crack formation

• Prevention from infestation and mold formation

Rendering not only helps give protection but also provides an aesthetic appeal to the building. A good tradesman can help give a coarse or fine render to your walls. Using colour pigments can give your walls colour. Using different tools, special designs, decorative effects and elegant finishing can be done on your walls.

Most of the time people look at applying paint to their walls to make them attractive and pleasing to one’s eye as well as to other viewers. But painting can also be a method to protect your house from water as well as giving it enhanced properties. There are paints available in the market that provide resistivity to water, help avoid crack formation, fill existing cracks, provide reflectivity against sunlight and heat and even help avoid dirt formation or settlement on your walls. These properties help keep your walls clean and protected, while at the same time helping your interior stay cooler during summer and warmer during winter.

Thus, proper application of waterproofing, render and paint to your home can help keep the adverse effects of water at bay, while providing an attractive appeal and efficiency to the building.
